Snowman dishes

I picked these dishes up at a thrift store last summer, and tucked them away in my stash for future projects. The future is now so to speak! It's that time of year when anything & everything becomes a base for a snowman. A little paint. A little time. A whole new look.

I'm not sure what the dishes would have been used for originally. Baking? Serving?

I've been watch some cooking shows while I paint.
Shows like Chopped.
And Restaurant Impossible.
And Cutthroat Kitchen.

And the more I watch these shows, the more I realize how little I know about cooking!

I consider myself a pretty good cook.

Cook. Not chef.

Ahhh. Maybe that's the difference.

Let's just say I don't think I'll be competing on any of these shows anytime soon.

Snowmen Insulators

Need proof that snowmen can be painted on anything?

I present snowmen insulators!

These are the old glass insulators that used to be on telephone poles.

 

When my sister saw the above photo on my Facebook page,
 she commented that I should paint some with black hats.

  So I did.

 

The second one from the left in the front row reminds me of something,

and at first, I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

 

Then it hit me........

Keystone Cops!

 

Please tell me I'm not the only one who sees it!

 

 

Scraps and more scraps

What do you do with some scraps of wood, and some scraps of an old cutter quilt?

 

Well....... I made a snowman family.

 

And what do you do with scraps from an old chenille bedspread?

 



  Well......... I made them into trees.

  So many scraps, so little time.

There's a snowman in that window

I've got a pile of old windows begging to be upcycled. I pulled out 3 and painted snowmen on them:

 

 

 

 

 

I like how these turned out, so I think I'll pull some more out of the pile and paint more snowmen.

Wood boxes, snowman style

I thought it would be fun to paint some old wood boxes,

and this time of year, snowmen come to mind.

On this box, I painted the "think snow" design on one side.

 

And an Americana design on the other.

Suitable for all seasons!

 

 

On this one, I painted snowflakes on one side.

 

 

And stuck with the snowman theme on the other side as well.

 

 

This one is frosty friends on one side.

You can use it with your holiday decor by turning it this direction,

then after the holidays, just turn it around to the unpainted side.

 

I'm going to have to scrounge up some more old boxes!

And now it's a snowman

It's that time of year again............

Snowmen.

 

And as proof that just about anything can be turned into a snowman,

I present to you Exhibit A:

Hmmmm....

What else can I transform?

Fur Boards decked out for Christmas

The 3 triangular shaped pieces are old fur boards.

They were used for stretching pelts.

I love the shape and patina of them,

and I think they make a great shape for

primitive snowmen.

The piece on the far right is an old barrel stave.

The old fur boards are also a great shape for Santa.

I'd much rather paint on old wood than new.

The character of the old wood brought on by the passing of time

is something we can try to recreate, but it's just not the same.

Snowmen

This time of year, snowmen tend to take over.

 They show up everywhere!

On suitcases.

And wreaths.

On sleds (seems appropriate)

And baking pans (appropriate? well.........whatever)

I painted some on glass bulbs.

And some on old barnwood.

How about some on railroad spikes?

These make great stocking holders.

Some show their pride in WV.



Others just kind of hang out.

Just chillin'...so to speak.

And some just looooove to play.

More are coming...

after all, it's not even December yet!

My Spray Paint OOPS Moment

When digging around for stuff to paint snowmen on, I ran across an old baking pan that was black, with white specks. White specks like snow! Hey! That would be fun to paint on!

So, I did. I painted a snowman on it, added a couple words, 4 stars and some snowflakes. Good enough! I took it, and several other things outside (in the cold!) to apply some spray varnish. I sprayed everything else first, and in doing so, emptied the can.

So, I ran back inside to get another can of varnish. I grabbed the first one I came to, and started shaking it as I went back out the door. I did notice the can was shaped a bit different at the top, but I just figured it was a new style of can, and didn't think anymore about it.

As soon as I got back outside, I started spraying the snowman painted on the black baking pan. I made a few sweeps across it before I noticed something odd. The clear varnish looked dirty. Actually, the clear varnish had a definite black tint. OH NO! I stopped and looked closer. The clear varnish I was using wasn't clear varnish at all! It was black spray paint!

Well, too late now...........I had no choice but to keep going. I sprayed a light coat of black over the whole thing. It actually worked out rather well.........now it just looks like the snowman was baked on. VERY baked on!

Look closely at the snowman, and you will see the black "smudges". And those star in the corners? They were gold before.............well, before My Oops Moment.

The moral of the story? Put the caps back on the cans before putting them away. You see, I had used the can of black spray paint before - but I didn't put the cap back on. And, when I put it away, I put it with the spray varnish instead of the spray paint. OOPS.

Snowmen!

I painted this jolly trio on what had been a frame for a mirror. It's big - 30 x 40 inches.

These ones are painted on the side piece of a cupboard that fell apart.



 And this one I painted on what was once a kitchen cabinet door.
